Search Engine Optimisation

Top SEO Tips

The following tips are generally recognised as being the most important influences on Google Rankings.

1. Using the main Keyword in the Title Tag

Placing the targeted search term or phrase in the title tag of the web page's HTML header has consistently been the most important on-page SEO factor for the past few years - e.g. www.fishing-new-zealand.com

2. Anchor Text of Inbound Link

The Anchor text of the inbound link is one of the most concise assessments another person can make about what your site/page is 'about'.

3. Global Link Popularity of Website

The overall link popularity/authority as measured by links from other (quality) websites across the Internet - a site’s overall link popularity will drastically effect rankings. Be wary - links from spurious websites are now penalised. Don't take up those 'one thousand links for ten dollars' offers.

4. Link Popularity within the Website

Refers to the number and importance of internal links pointing to the target page - without the proper linking structure, certain pages may not get enough emphasis.

5. Age of Website

Defined by the date of the launch of website when indexable content is seen by the Search Engines - aging has taken on more significance in the ranking factors. Basically Google is saying that they just well-established websites rather than new websites that may not last long.

6. Topical Relevance of Inbound Links

The subject-specific relationship between the sites/pages linking to the target page and the target keyword - relevant incoming links are good news and help with rankings as well. Links from quality Social Media sites are now very important as are reviews on Google Plus. Likes on Facebook no longer seem to be as important as Google knows that has been abused by many companies offering incentives for 'likes'.

7. Link Popularity of Site in Topical Community

The link weight/authority of the target website amongst its topical peers in the online world - a niche site may not have a high quantity of links but a few links from the 'authorities' in the web community is often enough to rank the site above the authorities for niche-related keywords. However, these can be hard to come by.

8. Keyword Use in Body Text

Using the targeted search term in the visible, HTML text of the page - it is important to use the keyword phrase throughout the page. But don't go overboard: 8-10% keyword density is regarded as the maximum. There are several free tools that will check your keyword density.

9. Global Link Popularity of Linking Website

The link popularity of the linking page and authority of the website is probably the most important factor when deciding on a link.

10. Topical Relationship of Linking Page

Evidence of page contents from a linking page affecting rankings of the linked page has been relevant for a long time now. Linking from totally irrelevant website pages will not go down well with Google. So linking from www.fishing-new-zealand.com to www.website-consultant.com is no longer a good idea. But linking from www.website-consultant.com to www.website-consultant.co.nz or to www.google-adwords.tech is fine by Google.

BUT - by the time this article is published, some of it will be out of date! Google changes its ranking algorithm very often and sometimes majorly. It pays to subscribe to Newsletters and Blogs that track such changes and advise subscribers.
